Spacebar Counter
How to use it: click START SPACE BAR TEST, then press the SPACE key on your keyboard as fast as you can. The 5 second timer starts with your first press. Only real key presses on a physical keyboard are counted.
This free spacebar counter counts how many times you press the SPACE key in 5 seconds and turns it into presses per second and an animal rank. Ranks run from Sloth to Cheetah, and more than 9 presses per second earns the top rank.
This space bar counter runs in your browser. There is nothing to download, nothing to sign up for, and your presses are never uploaded.
How to use the spacebar counter
- Click START SPACE BAR TEST to begin the space bar click test.
- Put your thumb or finger on the SPACE key.
- Press SPACE. Your first press starts the 5 second timer.
- Keep pressing as fast as you can until the time runs out.
- Read your result: total presses, presses per second and your rank.
The three boxes above the test show your live speed (CPS, here meaning presses per second), your Score (total presses) and the Timer. When the test ends, a result window shows your rank and links to a shorter and a longer spacebar test.
How the spacebar test counts presses
Like any spacebar speed test, the counter has to decide what one press is. Here, each press is counted when you release the SPACE key. That has two useful effects:
- Holding the key does nothing. A key held down sends repeated signals to the computer, but it is released only once, so it counts as one press. You cannot cheat by holding SPACE.
- Every press is a full press. You have to let the key come up again before the next press counts, which is exactly what you do when you hammer the spacebar in a game.
Only the SPACE key on a keyboard counts. Clicking the screen or tapping it on a phone does not add presses, so you need a physical keyboard. A laptop keyboard works fine, as does any external or Bluetooth keyboard.
Spacebar test ranks
Your rank is based on presses per second: your total divided by 5, rounded to one decimal place.
| Presses per second | Presses in 5 seconds | Rank |
|---|---|---|
| up to 3.5 | up to 17 | Sloth |
| 3.6 to 5.5 | 18 to 27 | Turtle |
| 5.6 to 6.6 | 28 to 33 | Panda |
| 6.7 to 6.9 | 34 | Mouse |
| 7.0 to 7.5 | 35 to 37 | Buffalo |
| 7.6 to 8.0 | 38 to 40 | Rabbit |
| 8.1 to 8.5 | 41 to 42 | Wolf |
| 8.6 to 9.0 | 43 to 45 | Tiger |
| over 9.0 | 46 or more | Cheetah |
So to reach Cheetah in this spacebar CPS test you need at least 46 presses in 5 seconds. The same per second thresholds apply to every spacebar test length on the site, which makes it easy to compare a short burst with a long stamina run.
How fast can you press the spacebar?
That is the question every spacebar clicker test tries to answer, and it depends far more on technique and rhythm than on strength. As a rough guide from the rank table above, 5 to 7 presses per second is a comfortable everyday speed, 8 or more is quick, and holding over 9 for the full 5 seconds is genuinely fast.
Your speed also tends to drop as the test gets longer, because the muscles in your thumb and hand tire. You will usually press a little faster over 2 seconds than over 30. Comparing your score across lengths shows how much stamina you have, not just how fast you start.
Tips for a faster spacebar score
- Choose your finger. Many people are fastest with the thumb they normally use for SPACE. Others prefer the index finger, or alternating two fingers or both thumbs. Try each and keep the fastest.
- Press lightly. The key only needs to go down far enough to register. Pressing hard wastes time and tires your hand.
- Find a rhythm. Even, steady presses beat a fast start that falls apart.
- Keep your wrist relaxed. Let the movement come from the finger, not the arm.
- Warm up. Your first attempt is usually your slowest.
- Take breaks. Fast repeated pressing can strain your hand. Stop if anything hurts.

Check whether your spacebar works properly
The counter is also a quick way to test a spacebar that feels wrong. Start the test and press SPACE slowly, about once a second, counting your presses out loud. When the timer ends, the Score should match your count exactly.
- Score lower than your count: some presses are not registering. Try pressing near the middle and near each end of the key. A long spacebar that only works in the middle often has a dirty or damaged stabiliser.
- Score higher than your count: the key is sending extra presses, which usually means a worn switch. On mechanical keyboards this is called chatter.
- Score matches but the key feels stiff: clean around the keycap and test again.
If the same fault shows up on another computer, the keyboard is the problem rather than your system.

Frequently asked questions
Does the spacebar counter work with any keyboard?
Yes. It works with laptop keyboards, external USB keyboards, Bluetooth keyboards, mechanical and membrane keyboards. It only listens for the SPACE key.
Can I use the spacebar counter on a phone?
Only with a keyboard connected. Tapping the screen does not count as a press, so on a phone or tablet without a keyboard the counter will stay at zero.
Why didn’t holding the spacebar count?
A press is counted when you release the key. Holding it down is one long press, so it adds only one.
Is my high score saved?
No. Each test starts from zero and nothing is stored or uploaded. Note your best result yourself, or take a screenshot of the result window.
What is a good spacebar CPS?
Anything from 7 presses per second upwards is a good score and earns at least the Buffalo rank. More than 9 presses per second earns Cheetah, the top rank.
What is the fastest way to press the spacebar?
A light, even rhythm with a relaxed hand. Some people go faster by alternating two fingers or both thumbs on the key. Practise one method and stick to it so your scores are comparable.
Why does my spacebar feel stiff or need a hard press?
Usually dirt under the keycap or a worn switch. Cleaning the keyboard often helps. If one side of a long spacebar works and the other does not, the stabiliser under the key may need attention.
