2 Minute Typing Test
How to play: click the text box and type the highlighted word, then press SPACE. The 2 minute timer starts with your first key. Press ESC to restart with new words.
This free 2 minute typing test checks your typing speed and accuracy over 120 seconds. It gives a steadier result than a 1 minute test, because one slow word or a single mistake has less effect on your final words per minute (WPM), while still being short enough to stay fully focused.
Every test uses random common English words, so you cannot learn the text by heart. Your best 2 minute score is saved in your browser on this device.
How the 2 minute typing test works
- Click the text box. The first word is highlighted.
- Type the word and press SPACE. The countdown starts on your first key.
- Correct words turn lime. Mistakes turn red and are crossed out.
- When the 2 minutes are up you see your WPM, accuracy and number of mistakes.
WPM is the number of correctly typed characters, including spaces, divided by 5 and then by 2 minutes. Words with a mistake do not count towards your speed.
Why choose a 2 minute test?
- A fairer average. Over two minutes, a good or bad start matters less, so your score is closer to your real everyday speed.
- Still easy to fit in. Two minutes is short enough to take several tests in one practice session.
- A first step in stamina. If your 2 minute score is clearly lower than your 1 minute score, your speed drops as you tire, and longer practice will help.
What is a good 2 minute typing score?
Your 2 minute score is usually a little lower than your 1 minute score. Around 40 WPM is often quoted as an average for regular typists, 60 WPM is fast for everyday work, and experienced touch typists often reach 80 WPM or more. Keep your accuracy at 95% or higher so the score reflects clean typing.
How to keep your speed for 2 minutes
- Start at a pace you can hold. Going too fast in the first 20 seconds often leads to a cluster of mistakes later.
- Read ahead. While typing one word, look at the next one so there is no pause between words.
- Recover quickly from mistakes. If you make an error, fix it or move on calmly. Dwelling on it costs more time than the mistake.
- Keep your wrists level. A relaxed position helps your fingers stay fast to the end.
