10 Minute Typing Test

How to play: click the text box and type the highlighted word, then press SPACE. The 10 minute timer starts with your first key. Press ESC to restart with new words.

This free 10 minute typing test is an endurance test for your fingers. Over ten minutes you find out not just how fast you can type, but how well you hold that speed and accuracy as you get tired. It is a good choice if you type for long periods for work or study, or if you are training for a longer typing assessment.

The words are random common English words, so you get a different test every time. Your best 10 minute score is saved in your browser on this device.

How the 10 minute typing test works

  1. Click the text box. The first word is highlighted.
  2. Type the word and press SPACE. The 10:00 countdown starts on your first key.
  3. Correct words turn lime. Mistakes turn red and are crossed out.
  4. When the time is up you see your words per minute (WPM), accuracy and number of mistakes.

Your WPM is the characters of all correct words, including spaces, divided by 5 and then by 10 minutes. Only correct words count, so a steady and accurate pace beats a fast start with many mistakes.

Why take a 10 minute typing test?

  • Real working speed. Writing a long document or transcribing is closer to ten minutes of typing than to a one minute sprint.
  • Find your weak point. Many people notice their accuracy dropping after a few minutes. A long test shows when it happens.
  • Build stamina. Regular long tests train your hands and your concentration to stay steady.

What score should I expect over 10 minutes?

Expect a score a few WPM below your 1 minute result. Around 40 WPM is often quoted as an average for regular typists, 60 WPM is fast, and experienced touch typists often stay above 80 WPM even over long tests. If your 10 minute score is close to your 1 minute score and your accuracy stays at 95% or more, your stamina is excellent.

Tips for long typing tests

  • Set up comfortably first. Adjust your chair, keyboard and screen before you start, because you cannot pause once the timer runs.
  • Keep a steady, relaxed rhythm. Aim for a pace you could keep for twenty minutes, not two.
  • Loosen your grip. Let your fingers rest lightly on the keys. Pressing too hard tires your hands.
  • Blink and breathe. Long concentration makes people hold their breath and stare. Staying relaxed helps you keep focus.
  • Stop if anything hurts. Pain in your wrists or hands is a sign to take a break and check your posture.
